A new £40 million urgent and emergency care facility has officially opened at Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral, marking the hospital’s biggest capital investment since it opened in 1982.

The development brings adult emergency care and the Urgent Treatment Centre together in one location, with a single point of entry designed to help patients access the service most appropriate for their needs.

The adult Emergency Department is run by Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, while the Urgent Treatment Centre is operated by Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust. Children requiring urgent or emergency treatment have access to a dedicated Children’s Emergency Department through the same main entrance.

The £40 million programme involved a complete redevelopment of emergency facilities for adults and children alongside the Urgent Treatment Centre. The project was delivered in four phases while urgent and emergency services remained operational.

The new model is intended to allow patients to be assessed and directed to the healthcare professional or service best suited to their needs, while providing improved clinical facilities for staff and patients.

The development also represents a further step towards closer integration between Wirral University Teaching Hospital and Wirral Community Health and Care, which are working towards becoming a single NHS trust in 2027.

Janelle Holmes, joint chief executive of the two trusts, said the facility would help provide a more seamless experience for patients and ensure people receive urgent or emergency support in the right setting.

The facility is expected to support thousands of patients each year and provide a modern environment for urgent and emergency care across Wirral.
