£4.5 Million Investment Announced to Improve Berkshire Maternity and Neonatal Services

Maternity and neonatal services across Berkshire will benefit from £4.5 million of government funding to help improve safety and modernise hospital facilities.

The investment will be used to address urgent infrastructure issues within maternity and neonatal units, including improvements to fire safety, ventilation systems and other ageing facilities, creating safer environments for mothers, babies and NHS staff. It forms part of a wider £187 million national capital investment in maternity and neonatal services announced since April 2025.

The government said the funding is intended to reduce immediate safety risks while supporting the long-term improvement of maternity and neonatal care. Capital funding is used to upgrade buildings and equipment rather than fund day-to-day clinical services.

The announcement comes as maternity services remain a national priority following a series of independent reviews into the quality and safety of care across England. The government has committed to improving maternity and neonatal services through targeted investment, alongside wider reforms aimed at enhancing safety, patient experience and outcomes.

The Department of Health and Social Care said the Berkshire funding will help ensure maternity and neonatal facilities are better equipped to provide safe, high-quality care for families across the region.
